TEXAS TENNIS AND EDUCATION FOUNDATION AWARDS DOLLARS FOR TEXAS SCHOLARS



The Texas Tennis and Education Foundation is excited to announce the recipients of its 2006 college scholarships as well as the Texas recipients of 2006 USTA Tennis & Education Foundation scholarships. The scholarships are awarded to ambitious and worthy graduating high school students who have an interest in tennis, excelled academically, participated in a USTA or other organized tennis program, performed significant community service, and have a desire to obtain a higher education, but are in significant need of financial aid. High school students who will be entering college and college students who are in good standing at their respective college or university, who are U.S. citizens, and who live in Texas are eligible and may apply.

In 1983, The Ben T. Ball Scholarship Fund was initially set-up and funded by an anonymous donor in honor of Ben Ball, as a tribute to what he has done for the youth of the state of Texas in tennis. Ben, at that time, was the Executive Director of the Texas Tennis Association. This year’s scholarship of $1,000 is awarded to Rebecca Hawthorne of White Oak, Texas.

In 1981, The Harold Green Endowment Fund was created by Harold Green in recognition of the Texas Tennis and Education Foundation’s mission of promoting tennis for all ages, through many and varied programs and of its support of the Texas Tennis Hall of Fame. In 1990, the Executive Committee of the Texas Tennis Association created The Harold Green Scholarship Fund, which is funded by proceeds from The Harold Green Endowment Fund and donations from patrons of the Texas Tennis and Education Foundation. This year’s scholarship of $1,000 is awarded to Stacy Alford of Dublin, Texas.

The Texas Tennis and Education Foundation, in an effort to deliver a positive message to the youth of Texas about the benefits of tennis and education, has again chosen to award eight additional $1,000 scholarships. It is the Foundation’s belief that the scholarship program, through tennis and education, will help young people to succeed in life, both on and off the court. The 2006 scholarships are awarded to Gina Ann Arevalo of Roma, Texas; David Ricardo Cantu of San Antonio, Texas; Brandon Carlson of Grapevine, Texas; Diana Davis of Boling, Texas; Laura and Wanda Ramirez of Monahans, Texas; Brandon Wommack of Greenville, Texas; Lauren Won of Garland, Texas; and Cody Wynn of Fairfield, Texas.

The USTA Tennis & Education Foundation and MassMutual Foundation for Hartford, Inc. (MassMutual Foundation) partnered to award $5,000 scholarships to 35 high school seniors across the U.S. Selection by the USTA Tennis & Education Foundation from applicants was on the basis of their commitment to academic success, their local community, and the game of tennis. The Texas recipients of these scholarships for 2006 are Hannah Fordham of Canyon, Texas and Colleen Lucas of Round Rock, Texas.

USTA Tennis & Education Foundation College Educational Scholarships, in the amount of $6,000 over 4 years, were awarded to high school seniors who have excelled academically and participated extensively in organized tennis programs such as USA school tennis, NJTL, USA Team Tennis or USA Tennis High Performance. The Texas recipients are Noora Ayyash of Arlington, Texas and Marlana Salmon of Corpus Christi, Texas.

Additionally, Joshua Hollis of Tyler, Texas was awarded one of ten College Textbook Awards in amount of $500.

Congratulations go out to all the 2006 Texas Tennis and Education Foundation and the 2006 USTA Tennis and Education Foundation Scholarship Program recipients.
