 |  Texas Scholars Awarded Texas Tennis Foundation Dollars 9/1/2004 - The Texas Tennis Foundation is excited to announce the recipients of its 2004 college scholarships. The scholarships are awarded to ambitious and worthy students who have an interest in tennis and who have a desire to obtain a higher education, but are in need of financial aid. High school students who will be entering college and college students who are in good standing at their respective college or university, who are U.S. citizens, and who live in Texas are eligible and may apply
In 1983, The Ben T. Ball Scholarship Fund was initially set-up and funded by an anonymous donor in honor of Ben Ball, as a tribute to what he has done for the youth of the state of Texas in tennis. Ben, at that time, was the Executive Director of the Texas Tennis Association. This year's scholarship of $1,000 is awarded to Elizabeth Field of Camp Wood, Texas.
In 1981, The Harold Green Endowment Fund was created by Harold Green in recognition of the Texas Tennis Foundation's mission of promoting tennis for all ages, through many and varied programs and of its support of the Texas Tennis Hall of Fame. In 1990, the Executive Committee of the Texas Tennis Association created The Harold Green Scholarship Fund, which is funded by proceeds from The Harold Green Endowment Fund and donations from patrons of the Texas Tennis Foundation. This year's scholarship of $1,000 is awarded to Anthony Geisleman of White Oak, Texas.
The Texas Tennis Museum and Hall of Fame Scholarship was created and funded by the Board of Trustees of the Texas Tennis Museum and Hall of Fame in order to expand the outreach of the museum and Hall of Fame in assisting with the education of a Texas tennis player. The first recipient of this scholarship is Anthony Cahill of Bandera, Texas.
The Texas Tennis Foundation, in a effort to deliver a positive message to the youth of Texas about the benefits of tennis and education, has chosen to award eight additional $1,000 scholarships. It is the Foundation's belief that the scholarship program, through tennis and education, will
help young people to succeed in life, both on and off the court. The 2004 scholarships are awarded to Alejandra Garza of Zapata, Texas; Esiquiel Gonzalez of Brownsville, Texas; Krystal Harris of Oakwood, Texas; Scott Hawk of Buna, Texas; Whitnee Hemphill of San Angelo, Texas; MarRissa Inman of Pilot Point, Texas; Sung Hoon Shin of Houston, Texas; and Tosha Miller of Streetman, Texas.
Congratulations go out to all the 2004 Texas Tennis Foundation Scholarship Program recipients. A special thanks to the member of the 2004 Scholarship Awards Committee for their time and effort spent during the selection process.

Anthony Cahill
Throughout Anthony's middle school and high school educational life, he was involved in competitive tennis. Each year he competed at the District UIL level and advanced to the regional tournament, representing Bandera High School. He graduated valedictorian of the class of 2003 and is currently attending Baylor University where he is pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Biology and a minor in Medical Humanities. Anthony's ultimate goal is to become a medical missionary and focus his attention in helping others to reach their aspirations. Anthony received the first ever Texas Tennis Museum and Hall of Fame Scholarship.

Elizabeth Field
While residing in Camp Wood, Texas, for the past six years, Elizabeth attended Nueces Canyon High School in Barksdale, Texas. She began playing tennis in the seventh grade on invitation by friends and has progressed to the point that she represented her high school at the State UIL Tennis Class A Championships in Girls Doubles. Elizabeth's educational plans include first studying to become a License Vocational Nurse and then continuing her college studies to become a Register Nurse. Elizabeth received the Ben T. Ball Scholarship and will be attending Southwest Texas Junior College in Uvalde, Texas.

Alejandra Garza
Alejandra was recognized by her English teacher and tennis coach as being very diligent and conscientious, and displays great leadership skills while being a very positive role model for younger kids. Not only did she represent Zapata High School on the tennis team, but she also was a member of the National Honor Society, a representative on Student Council, a class officer, an editor of the school newspaper, a captain of the Color Guard, and participated in UIL events in mathematics and calculator competitions. While studying and attaining academic excellence, being named valedictorian of her graduating class, she performed community service at the Boys' and Girls' Club and volunteered at the nursing home for the elderly in Zapata. In receiving a Texas Tennis Foundation Scholarship, Alejandra plans to pursue a degree in Biomedical Engineering at Texas A&M University.

Anthony Geisleman
Upon graduating from Gladewater High School in Gladewater, Texas, in 2003, Anthony received a Texas Tennis Foundation scholarship that enabled him to begin his college education at The University of Texas at Tyler. Anthony occasionally plays and is undefeated in two tournaments in the Men's 3.5 Level of USTA tennis in Texas. Anthony has little free time, as he works full time while attending college. His persistence and desire to become a computer engineer has helped in his re-selection for the Harold Green Scholarship for 2004.

Esiquiel Gonzalez
Often high school students entering college are unsure of what they want to pursue. This is not the case, as Esiquiel knows that his goal is to become a pharmacist, as he has the desire to assist others in his hometown and to make an impact on societal needs. An avid tennis player, who for the past four years competitively represented Gladys Porter High School in Brownsville, Texas, in UIL events; was active in the Technology Student Association; and served as a volunteer in many community projects. Esiquiel has chosen to pursue his dreams at The University of Texas at Austin where the awarding of a Texas Tennis Foundation Scholarship for 2004 will help to offset his educational costs in the School of Pharmacy.

Krystal Harris
Krystal's plans include attending The University of Texas at Austin and majoring in Political Science in preparation for law school. While attending Fairfield High School in Fairfield, Texas, Krystal played on the tennis team, competed in UIL Spelling, Vocabulary, and UIL Ready Writing events, and received honors in Who's Who Among American High School Students, as well as being selected as World History Student of the Year. Krystal also worked full time while going to school in order to raise money for college. In receiving a Texas Tennis Foundation Scholarship, Krystal will be able to attain the groundwork necessary to fulfilling her dreams.

Scott Hawk
Scott graduated from Buna High School in Buna, Texas. He played varsity tennis all four years of high school, placing 3rd in District UIL competition. Other sports that he participated in were basketball, cross country track, and soccer. Scott was a member of the National Honor Society, made the Honor Roll all four years, won 2nd place at State UIL Robotics competition, and was voted Class Favorite - 'Best All Around' for two years. Scott's will be attending Lamar University. Scott received a Texas Tennis Foundation Scholarship.

Whitnee Hemphill
Whitnee was born and raised in San Angelo, Texas. She graduated from Wall High School, where she played on the tennis and basketball teams, was head cheerleader, crowned homecoming queen, and volunteered in the PAL program. Whitnee has developed metal toughness and is a team player. These qualities will enable her to attain her degree in Journalism from Abilene Christian University in Abilene, Texas. Whitnee's college assistance comes from a Texas Tennis Foundation Scholarship.

Marrissa Inman
Marissa is a 2004 graduate from Pilot Point High School in Pilot Point, Texas. During her high school years, she played on the Varsity Tennis Team, served as both the Student Council and Junior Class treasurers, volunteered as an after school tutor, and worked in order to save money for college. Marissa plans to attend Tulsa Community College in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and upon completion of her general education requirements, transferring to the University of Tulsa and majoring in Accounting with intentions of becoming a CPA. A Texas Tennis Foundation Scholarship will help to launch Marissa on her way.

Sung Hoon Shin
Began playing tennis at the age of 6. Sung graduated from James E. Taylor High School in Katy, Texas, where he was captain during both his junior and senior years on the Varsity Tennis team. He was a member of the UIL 5A State Team Tennis team his junior year. As a member of the National Honor Society and Future Business Leaders of America, Sung volunteered for food drives, candy drives, the Samaritan's Purse Christmas Operation, where less fortunate children around the world received gifts during the holiday season, and the local Star of Hope in providing food, clothing, and shelter for the homeless. Sung is entering Rice University with his academic aspirations set in the field of economics; furthermore, he is a recipient of a 2004 Texas Tennis Foundation Scholarship.

Tosha Miller
Tosha spent her high school years budgeting time between tennis, class work, Symphonic Band, UIL One-Act play competition, UIL Poetry Interpretation, and family responsibilities. Tosha listened to her parents, who taught her that if she wanted to improve things, she needed to get involved. She did, as she performed many hours of volunteer service in Streetman, Texas. Tosha graduated from Fairfield High School in Fairfield, Texas. Her selection as a recipient of a Texas Tennis Foundation Scholarship helps Tosha to attend Navarro College in Corsicana, Texas, and to study both nursing and graphic design.
