Scholarship Winners 2006

Stacy Alford
Throughout Stacy’s life, her teachers have characterized her as having the ability to take the initiative to get things done both in or out of school. This positive trait will enable her to be successful as she begins her dream of attending college and attaining the valuable tools and education to be competitive in the business world. Stacy graduated 7th in her senior class at Dublin High School and was a Regional Semi-Finalist in tennis. She received the Harold Green Scholarship and is planning to attend Tarleton State University in Liberal, Kansas where she will be pursuing a general studies curriculum her freshman year.

Gina Ann Arevalo
Because of her outstanding efforts get ahead in life by pursuing a dual credit education while attending high school, Gina was selected to be awarded a scholarship by the Texas Tennis and Education Foundation. Her impressive background in giving back to her community and maintaining high academic standards complements her tennis competitiveness as she has also contributed to her high school championship team. Gina graduated 3rd in 2006 senior class at Roma High School and her educational plans are center around government and pre-law. Gina received a Texas Tennis and Education Foundation Scholarship and will be attending The University of Texas in Austin, Texas.

David Ricardo Cantu
A very goal oriented person who professes that his education is at the center of his career goals. Upon graduating from high school, David will be attending The University of Texas in Austin, Texas where he has been accepted into the prestigious Plan II academic honors program. As a member of his school’s National Honor Society, he has performed many of hours of community service. His passion for tennis was seen by the many hours he has devoted to his high school team as both the captain and a key player. David received a Texas Tennis Foundation Scholarship.

Brandon Carlson
A strong individual whose faith and desire to give back to his community through service projects have made him a respected individual in the Dallas Metroplex area. Brandon’s academic efforts are strong as shown by his ability to play high school tennis and maintain an “A” average thus graduating within the top 10% of his class of 488 students. He has played USTA tennis within Texas and is currently a Championship level player. His career goals include becoming an educator and also coaching/teaching tennis. An outstanding achievement of note that shows Brandon’s character is his annual participation in a charity event for Children’s Hospital known as “Children Helping Children”. He has organized and run a satellite adult event located in Grapevine that brought in a phenomenal amount of funds for the charitable cause. Brandon was awarded a Texas Tennis and Education Foundation Scholarship and will be attending the University of the Ozarks.

Diana Davis
A graduate of Boling High School in Boling, Texas, Diana has been very active in her community by volunteering in many capacities. She has taken time to develop her personal skills that enable her to interact with her peers and adults around her thus ultimately gaining their highest respect. She has a strong desire to attain a Bachelor’s Degree in the College of Health Professions at Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas, with a major in Radiation Therapy. Through the years of playing tennis, she has developed an appreciation for the sport and continues to play. “Work hard and make the right choices in life” has been instilled in her as a success plan. Diana has been awarded a Texas Tennis Foundation Scholarship to assist her in reaching her dreams.

Rebecca Hawthorne
Challenges both on and off the court are not new to Rebecca. She is characterized by her teachers as having the ability to be academically successful while still remaining active in extra-curricular activities. She has been a member of the tennis team at White Oak High School for the past four year. Rebecca chose to balance his school and tennis activities with a strong dedication to community service. By seeking a degree in biology, she plans to follow-up with Dental School in order to become an Orthodontist. Rebecca received the Ben T. Ball Scholarship and will be attending the University of Texas in Tyler, Texas.

Laura Ramirez
Being recognized as the Most Valuable Girl’s Tennis Player two years in a row by her peers is truly an accomplishment for Laura. Not only has she qualified for the UIL Regional Tournament in tennis, Kristin has also participated in the Monahans High School band, participated in the Student Council for four years, selected and attended the First International Lorenzo de Zavala National Hispanic Institute program in Puerto Rico, and graduated in the top 10% of her class. Laura has also found time to do community service activities and work to earn money for her college education. She plans on attending the Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas and majoring in pre-pharmacy. Kristin is a recipient for a Texas Tennis and Education Foundation Scholarship.

Wanda Ramirez
While attending Monahans High School in Monahans, Texas, Wanda lettered four years in varsity tennis while playing doubles with her twin sister Laura. She is also very active in school as a student council representative for four years, National Honor Society member, Senior Class President, UIL Solo and Ensemble participant, and graduated in top 20% of her senior class. During Wanda’s senior year, she found time to do community service projects and work to earn money for college. She plans on attending Midland College in Midland, Texas and her career path of interest is photography. Wanda was awarded a Texas Tennis and Education Foundation Scholarship.

Brandon Wommack
Brandon participated not only in tennis and track at Lone Oak High School in Lone Oak, Texas, but also competed in school’s One Act Play cast. Brandon understanding the value of education and made the commitment to doing what it takes to graduate as the school’s Salutatorian. Additional school activities found him volunteering in National Honor Society community service projects and taking dual credit courses at the local junior college. Brandon’s educational plans include attending the University of Texas in Tyler, Texas and studying to become a secondary education teacher and coach. Brandon will receive assistance through a Texas Tennis and Education Foundation Scholarship.

Lauren Wong
Lauren is described by one of her teachers as having “a true zest for life and a love for learning that goes beyond even academic excellence in grades.” Yes, education is at the center of her life. From a very young age, she dreamed of becoming a journalist as she feels this is a way to express herself. Also of competing interest in her life is psychology as she constantly analyzes people in an effort to understand them. Lauren has prepared herself well by being involved in all areas of her high school including tennis, cheerleading squad, basketball team, and National Honor Society; volunteering in the community with food drives and church projects; and finishing 4th in her graduating class. In order to attain her ultimate career goal, Lauren has applied and been accepted to the University of Texas in Austin, Texas and will be attending with the aid of a Texas Tennis and Education Foundation Scholarship.

Cody Wynn
Cody is described by his teachers as being a dedicated and participating student. During his high school period, he participated in basketball for 4 years and tennis for 2 years. He was also a member and participated in Family, Career and Community Leaders of America activities and was the local chapter’s president. Cody has participated in community service projects in Fairfield including a clothes drive for needy families and an “adopt a grandparent” project. In order to attain his ultimate career goal, Cody has applied and been accepted to the Stephen F. Austin University in Nacogdoches, Texas and will be attending with the aid of a Texas Tennis and Education Foundation Scholarship.
